If you are learning English, animated films may be the best way to practice. You can watch them with subtitles in your language or in English if you want to read along. The following list of animated films offers a great opportunity for learners of all levels. It includes films with subtitles in both languages and films without any subtitles at all that are perfect for beginner-level students–or anyone who would like see what Mamoru Oshii has been up to lately. 1) Spirited Away (2001). This film by Hayao Miyazaki is widely considered one of the greatest works of animation ever made, and it’s engaging enough for viewers of any age or level. The plot is about Chihiro, a girl who wanders into a town built on the spirit world. The plot may seem complex for beginners, but there are no subtitles to distract focus from the plot. 2) Up (2009). This film by Disney is an uplifting story that shows the importance of friendship between humans and dogs. The plot follows an old man who reminisces about his past while trying to set off on an adventure with help from his pet dog, Russell. There are no subtitles in this film, but it is enjoyable for all ages and levels of English ability. 3) Ponyo (2008). This animated film by Miyazaki is the perfect length for beginners. The plot follows a young girl who gets lost on the ocean waves after being turned into a fish by her mother. She returns to the land to seek help from her father. The film is based on an old folktale, and it’s less than 10 minutes long. It’s an animated family film that will be enjoyed by children of all ages and levels of English ability. 4) The Bigger They Are (2006). This animated film by Dawn Koskela is perfect for beginners who are looking for family entertainment at any level. The plot follows two husband-and-wife teams of lawyers as they try to help their children prevent criminals from taking over their business empire in this well-written action thriller. This film has subtitles in both languages, so it’s the ideal choice for intermediate-level English learners, who can read along when it is convenient for them. 5) WALL·E (2008). This charming animated film by Pixar follows the journey of a robot named WALL·E who lives on a planet that has been abandoned by humans. While the plot is simple and easy to follow, there is still some language learning involved. If you understand Spanish, you can enjoy all of the Spanish in WALL·E. And if you understand French or German, you can also appreciate some of the French and German in this film. Other languages with subtitles in this movie include Vietnamese and Chinese (traditional and simplified). 6) A Cat in Paris (2010). This French animated film is one of the best for intermediate-level English learners. It was written by Alexandre Espigares, who is also the director and animator. The plot follows two cat burglars who live in Paris. They try to stop an evil business tycoon from his plan to replace humans with robots, but there are some unexpected twists in the plot. As mentioned above, this film has subtitles in Spanish, French, German and Chinese (traditional and simplified). 7) Princess Mononoke (1997).
